English I is the first of four required English classes. The course includes a variety of instructional techniques and assessment. The course is intended to be a general introduction into Language Arts. Students participate in many types of literature, composition and grammar. The literature component includes short stories, novels, non-fiction, drama and poetry. Some of the authors covered in English I include, Shakespeare, Poe, Chopin, Twain, Thurber, Doyle, and many others. Writing is taught through the Write_On Illinois Holistic Writing approach that is highlighted by autobiographies and the 2-3 page research paper on social issues. One book report, an extensive study of Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet, and numerous videos including "12 Angry Men" and "The Miracle Worker," are used to add to the students total learning experience. Global Studies is a course in which students receive a balanced, broad view of the interaction of people with their physical and cultural environments. The course offers a general information background and is crucial in the development of students awareness of "the big picture." Students tour the world exploring many places they may never see, they study the customs, weather patterns, government, economic systems and vegetation and gain a broader perspective of other nations and the problems they face. English II is the second of four required English classes. This course includes a variety of instructional techniques and assessment methods.
