Mission and Goals
District 13-3 maintains the belief that highly capable students require different programs that go beyond those normally provided in the regular curriculum. To achieve that goal, the program
will provide services which focus on the needs of these students. Vienna High School Gifted Program constitutes an important component of the district's total educational plan. It is the ultimate aim of the program to stimulate and challenge students to translate their potential into performance and become responsible citizens, sensitive to the needs of a changing society.
The objectives of the program are
- To provide for the mastery of the basic skills in all the fundamental areas of learning at a pace and depth appropriate to the capacities of able learners at every grade level. Students will participate in a diagnostic-prescriptive model of instruction that would allow for individual rates of mastery, regardless of age or grade.
- To promote critical thinking and reasoning abilities. Students will be instructed in the areas of inference, deductive and inductive reasoning, analogies, and evaluation of arguments. These reasoning tools will be applied to all areas of the curriculum.
- To provide an environment that encourages divergent thinking. Students will be encouraged in the development of originality, fluency, flexibility, and elaboration in their thought processes.
- To facilitate opportunities for learning that are external to the school but provide an important match to the needs of learners. Students will be able to gain access to educational advantages provided by resources outside the environment of the school.
